New Year Resolutions

I went into my classroom today. I was amazed at the number of my fabulous co-workers who spent part of their hard earned vacation in their classrooms getting ready for the kiddos to start back Monday.
Part of the reason I went in was to get a piece of my New Year's resolution ready. Lately I've been feeling like my kiddos who cause problems get all of my attention. It's easy to focus on the ones who whine and yell at me all day, and all too often my amazingly sweet, responsible kiddos get less of my attention. One way I'm planning on changing this is simple awards. In one of my clipart books it has some cute awards like "Good Reader" , and "Best Friend". My goal is at the end of each day to choose a couple kiddos and hand out these awards. That way even if I'm distracted during the school day by my needy kiddos, the sweet ones still get some recognition.
The other part of my resolution is to be more firm with my kiddos. All of my teaching experience has been in more affluent areas where parents are very involved and practically breathe down your neck. This year I'm in a Title 1 school and the kiddos and families are quite different. I've discovered that I've been a bit to timid, and that sometimes I just need to be more abrubt.
Hopefully these will play out well.
